TM: webe to launch by the middle of this year

Incumbent fixed operator, Telekom Malaysia Bhd's entry into 4G market may put more pressure on mobile phone operators.

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd's (TM) newly launched mobility services unit 'webe' will be launched by the middle of this year, confirmed TM's chief executive officer Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa.

“We expect that webe will be available commercially in the middle of the year. Only then will you be able to see the actual packages on offer,” he told reporters following the group's annual general meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Webe, formerly known as Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd (P1), was launched in early April under a rebranding exercise. However, at that time, no mobile plans were announced regarding the service.

Zamzamzairani further clarified that the launching of webe is progressing as scheduled and that it is currently in closed user group testing phase.

TM's group chief financial officer Datuk Bazlan Osman added that the capex rollout relating to webe will be announced following the service's commercial launch.
