TAPAH: A total of 9.53 billion units of Permodalan Nasional Bhd’s (PNB) unit trust funds for bumiputras still remained unsubscribed, chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid said.
He expressed confidence that the units would be fully subscribed by bumiputras as the country marched towards 2020 with the people moving into a high-income bracket.
“It is a policy molded to fulfill the mandate set by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when he launched the Malaysian Unit Trust Week (MSAM) 2016 recently, asserting that the country’s wealth should be distributed and shared among the people at minimal risk.
“This is because the means and methods set by the Government via PNB provided protection to the investors,” he said at the closing ceremony of the MSAM 2016 at the Tun Ahmad Sarji Stadium in Tapah on Wednesday.
Ahmad Sarji said PNB needed to continue holding investment education via seminars.
He said they were held in 140 districts and benefited 500,000 participants, among them school children, university students and members of the uniformed groups nationwide.
“PNB has always earnestly preserved and protected bumiputra properties which to date has liquid assets are worth RM267.1bil and properties worth RM12.5bil,” he said.
“PNB will also continue to play its role to empower the bumiputra agenda specifically in the appointment of bumiputra contractors in the manufacturing and construction sectors plus increasing the number of bumiputra professionals,” he said.
The eight-day MSAM 2016 recorded an extraordinary turnout of 181,946 people, while the number of visitors exceeded the target of 150,000. - Bernama
