PETALING JAYA: Sunway Bhd's indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd (SunCon), has accepted a letter of award worth approximately RM452.5mil from Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd for the proposed design, construction, completion and commissioning of the proposed bus rapid transit (BRT) - Sunway Line.
“The works include guideway and halts, depot, park and ride, and mechanisation of the oxidation pond of the proposed BRT.
“The proposed BRT is targeted to be completed within 24 months from the date of award and is expected to contribute positively to the earnings of Sunway from the financial year ending Dec 31, 2013 onwards,” said Sunway in its filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday.
The proposed BRT will provide eco-friendly bus services on elevated tracks for visitors to Sunway Resort City and residents in Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya.
The completion of the proposed BRT, which is approximately 5.4 km, will link key commercial areas in Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya with seven stations as well as strategically connecting to other modes of public transportation such as the light rail transit (LRT) and KTM Komuter.
As part of Sunway's continuous corporate social responsibility initiatives, Sunway will additionally and separately contribute works estimated to cost approximately RM99mil to the proposed BRT .
The project is subject to normal construction risk of material price fluctuation. However, with the past experience and expertise of SunCon in construction projects in Malaysia, this risk could be mitigated.
Due to open in early 2015, it was reported that this line would address the traffic congestion in Bandar Sunway, especially the traffic heading from Sunway Pyramid on to the Federal Highway.
Previous reports had also stated that the line would have stops at the Sunway Mentari area, Sunway Lagoon, Sunway Medical Centre, Monash University (with park and ride), the Summit Subang USJ shopping centre, and Persiaran Kewajipan near Goodyear Court.
With high-catchment stops that service the township's universities as well as the popular Sunway Pyramid, both of which attract a high number of students and young people, the BRT would likely be well-utilised. It will be complemented by an elevated pedestrian network which recycles parts of the infrastructure previously erected by the Sunway Group for its mini monorail system.
The BRT is also Bandar Sunway's missing link between the KTM line (connecting to the Setia Jaya station) and the LRT extension (connecting near Summit USJ).
