SOON, users of the largest online travel website will be able to choose eco-friendly accommodations from around the world, now that its green programme will expand to Canada, Britain, Ireland and France, among others.

TripAdvisor has announced plans to expand its GreenLeaders programme to 19 other markets in Canada and Europe, following a debut run in the United States.

That means that environmentally conscious users will be able to book a hotel room or bed and breakfast from owners who are making an effort to adopt sustainable practices.

Properties are assessed against a set of criteria that includes everything from the re-use of linens and towels, recycling and composting to solar panels and electric car charging stations.

Qualifying properties will be ranked into four different tiers – bronze, silver, gold and platinum – and the award shown on the property’s TripAdvisor listing.

Since its launch last spring, the GreenLeaders programme has awarded 3,700 properties across the United States. The Canadian and European listings are expected to be available later this year.

Earlier this year, BookDifferent (www.bookdifferent.com/en) out of the Netherlands launched as a booking site specialising in eco-friendly accommodations. Qualifying properties will be assessed by certification bodies like Green Key and Green Globe.

Expedia.com also has a green search option. — AFP Relaxnews
