Dynamic duo: The two Tab S2 models will be available in three colours

The race to make the thinnest, lightest and best tablet continues.

The latest contender is the Galaxy Tab S2, which Samsung claims is the thinnest and lightest Android tablet of its size, at just 5.6mm thick – the 9.7in version weighs 392g while the 8in tips the scale at 272g.

Both versions are identical in every way except for the screen and battery size. The larger 9.7in model has a 5,870mAh battery while the 8in has a 4,000mAh battery.

Samsung has shoehorned a lot into the svelte aluminium and plastic body of the Tab S2. The device, which runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop, has a 2,048 x 1,536-pixel Amoled screen, octa-core (with 1.9GHz and 1.3Ghz cores) processor, fingerprint scanner, 32GB storage, 3GB RAM, MicroSD slot and support for LTE.

Both devices also have an 8-megapixel rear camera with an f/1.9 lens, and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera.

Following Samsung’s usual practice, the Tab S2 will come with Microsoft Office applications with 100GB of free OneDrive online space for two years.

Samsung is also offering a one-year free subscription to the iFlix movie and TV streaming service.

Optionally, you can get the Book Cover Keyboard for the Tab S2 which gives you a large keyboard with touchpad. However, the Book Cover Keyboard only comes in one size that fits the 9.7in model.

Both models of the Tab S2 will be available in three colours, namely white, black or gold.

Price for the 8in model of the Galaxy Tab 2 is RM1,699 while the 9.7in model is RM1,999, inclusive of GST.

No price or release date has been set for the Book Cover Keyboard.
