The Twitterverse lit up with references to the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor after the 5-2 US victory over Japan in the Women's World Cup championship match but other Twitter users called those comments offensive.
"Hey Japan, that one was for Pearl Harbor. U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A," Twitter user Cloyd Rivers wrote in a tweet that was "favourited" more than 15,000 times and retweeted 10,200 times.
