TM’s stand on 30Mbps and 50Mbps UniFi plans

TM quietly rolled out new UniFi packages for new subscribers with faster speeds of up to 30Mbps (megabits per second) and 50Mbps.

The 30Mbps packages comes in two flavours  – the one with HyppTV Aneka, Ruby and Varnam channels goes for RM210.94 per month while the plan with all HyppTV channels costs RM242.74 per month.

The 50Mbps plan is offered as an add-on at RM53 per month. All prices are inclusive of GST.

The company hasn’t publicised the packages much and apparently they are only open to new subscribers at certain locations.

We had an email interview with TM’s Imri Mokhtar, executive vice president of consumer and SME, to talk about how the packages fit into the current TM UniFi offerings.

Amongst the answers we wanted to know was whether existing subscribers of 5Mbps, 10MBps or 20MBps plan will be upgraded to faster speeds or get a price reduction.

Location, location, location
First off, it seems that the reason the 30/50Mbs package is not offered to existing users because TM will be conducting trial runs until June 30, and wants to “avoid degradation of experience for current customers”.

So, it’s only being offered in a limited number of residential areas, namely Duta, Damansara, Kepong, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Serdang, Puchong, Shah Alam and Subang Jaya.

Consumers who aren’t existing customers of UniFi and are interested to register for the new service can enquire at a TMpoint outlet within the service areas.

Imri assures us that once the trial period is over, TM plans to roll out the faster UniFi offerings to its existing user base and widen the coverage based on demand or “normal business case” basis.

However, he did not elaborate or give us a detailed timeline for the rollout.

Other issues
According to Imri, once the service has been officially announced, eligible existing customers will be allowed to upgrade to  the 30/50Mbps packages “seamlessly” and any penalty charges will be waived if their current contract is not yet over.

Registering for the 30/50Mbps will be based on a two-year contract. He did not elaborate on whether existing customers who opt to stay with their current speed will get a price reduction for their existing UniFI package.

“We will announce when the packages are ready to be offered to the mass market and the detailed package offerings at the appropriate time later.” he said.
