LIT UP: A map showing the progression and origin on the tweets throughout the event.

A Twitter-based event that connected art institutions with art lovers from March 23-29 ultimately drew 2,825 participants from 77 countries, reported the microblogging service.

#MuseumWeek took over Twitter for a week that was structured into seven hashtags, one per day, comprising #secretsMW, with institutions showing what goes on behind the scenes; #souvenirsMW, encouraging all to share souvenirs and memories of their museum visits; #architectureMW, exploring museums' history, architecture heritage, gardens and surroundings; #inspirationMW, inviting users to "create and share for posterity"; #familyMW, with which museums shared tips for those looking to visit with kids; #favMW, encouraging tweets related to favourite works, venues, etc.; and #poseMW – the time for posting selfies and creating memes.
