PETALING JAYA: The doubles competition in the US$984,300 (RM3.2mil) Malaysian Open tennis tournament from Sept 21-29 at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil is expected to be a sizzling affair this year with the presence of three-time Grand Slam champions Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia and Julien Benneteau of France.
The pair are chasing one of the eight places in this year’s ATP World Tour Finals in London in November.
They have been in excellent form so far this year, having won the ATP Masters 1000 Monte Carlo in April after defeating the Bryan brothers of Bob and Mike in the final.
Zimonjic-Benneteau also won the Citi Open in Washington in July after beating Radek Stepanek-Mardy Fish in the final.
At Wimbledon this year, Zimonjic-Bennetaeu fell to Leander Paes-Radek Stepanek at the quarter-final stage.
Also in the fray for the Malaysian Open are the partnerships of Santiago Gonzalez (Mexico)-Scott Lipsky (US) and Treat Huey (Philippines)-Dominic Inglot (Britain).
Gonzalez-Lipsky come into the Malaysian Open with titles in Halle (Germany) and Oeiras (Portugal) as well as semi-final appearances at three ATP Masters 1000 semi-finals in Indian Wells, Rome and Cincinnati.
“This year is our fourth anniversary and we are thrilled to be celebrating the milestone with a very exciting line-up for the doubles draw,” said tournament director Nick Freyer.
“It will be a fantastic week of tennis in singles as well with French Open finalist David Ferrer and US Open semi-finalist Stanislas Wawrinka coming.”
Adding excitement to the tournament will be tennis legend Pat Cash, who will be in town to host CNN’s Open Court tennis magazine show.
“We are honoured that Pat Cash has decided to film the show here and we treasure the relationship with CNN as one of our supporters,” said Freyer.
