LONDON (Reuters) - Wimbledon's genteel surrounds resembled Saturday night on a casualty ward as injuries saw seven players withdraw or retire and third seed Maria Sharapova stumble to a shock second-round defeat on Wednesday.
Former champion Sharapova fought until the bitter end against Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito, despite needing 10 minutes of treatment after a painful fall on Court Two, but lost 6-3 6-4 to a player ranked 131 in the world.
