MADRID: Big guns Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams had to overcome tough obstacles before moving into the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters yesterday and avoided becoming the latest big names to be dumped out of the tournament.
Nadal always had to be at his best as he recovered from a set and a break down to beat compatriot and always impressive David Ferrer 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 to make the semis.
