Winless Nafiizwan desperate for change of fortune

KUALA LUMPUR: National number two Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan is not a happy camper.

The 28-year-old Terengganu-born player, who turned professional since 2006, has failed to win a single title in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) tournaments this year.

Nafiizwan, the former Asian champion, did not lived up to his top billing in the Blue and Health Racquet Open tournament in Melbourne last week when he was upset by second seed Leo Au of Hong Kong in five sets 4-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-7, 8-11 in a gruelling 125 minutes match.

To make matters worst, Nafiizwan also failed to break into the top 30 in the world rankings.

Nafiizwan, who is currently ranked 34th, said it has not been a fruitful year for him.

“I failed to bag a single title in the pro circuit. My best chance to win my first title was in Melbourne on Sunday,” said Nafiizwan.

“I am also disappointed for failing to break into the top 30 of the world rankings for the last three years now. My best rankings was 30 in 2011 but since then I have failed to move up.

“Hopefully I can end my title drought at the Royal Lake Club Open next week,” said Nafiizwan who is the top seed.

Nafiizwan, who lost to national No. 1 Ong Beng Hee in the final last year, will open his campaign against a qualifier.

Apart from Malaysia this year’s event from Dec 15-19 will see participations from Egypt, India, Qatar, Kuwait and Hong Kong.
