On Friday, Commonwealth Games defending champion Nicol powered her way past 21-year-old Megan Craig of New Zealand 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 to reach the quarter-finals of the women’s singles at the Scotstoun Sports Campus.
She will take on England’s Jenny Duncalf, who played superbly to beat Sam Cornett of Canada 11-4, 11-5, 11-7.
On Thursday, world No. 1 Nicol had beaten Vanessa Florens of Mauritius 11-6, 11-2, 11-1.
Team manager K. Sivanesan said: “As usual, Nicol put up a polished display and is looking good (for the gold). Credit, though, to her younger opponent for trying her best to outplay Nicol.”
National No.2 Low Wee Wern also joined Nicol in the last eight after beating Wales’ Tesni Evans 11-5, 11-7, 12-14, 11-9.
Wee Wern who turned 24 on Friday, will go on to meet second seed and reigning world champion Laura Massaro of England for a place in the semi-finals.
National No.3 Delia Arnold however crashed out after losing 6-11, 10-12, 5-11 to India’s Dipika Pallikal.
In the men’s singles, Ivan Yuen played the match of his life to stun sixth seed Alister Walker of Botswana in the fourth round.
The world No.72 Ivan was in inspired mood as he took down the world No.24 Walker 11-8, 9-11, 11-2, 11-8 in 65 minutes.
The 23-year-old Ivan is the last Malaysian man in the singles after Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan had earlier fallen in the last 16, going down 7-11, 6-11, 3-11 to England’s Peter Barker.
National No. 1 Ong Beng Hee had crashed out on the opening day.
