PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Nicol David’s fifth British Open success last month has helped her stay ahead of close rival Laura Massaro of England in the world squash rankings.
The Penangite’s four-set win over world champion Massaro has firmly entrenched her position as the world No. 1 – which she has held since August 2006.
Nicol, who turns 31 on Aug 26, now has 28,270 points compared to Massaro’s 20,221.5 total. The Englishwoman dropped crucial ranking points after failing to defend her British Open title.
Malaysian No. 2 Low Wee Wern climbed back up to No. 7 after reaching the quarter-finals for the first time at the world’s oldest squash tournament.
The 23-year-old was ranked No. 6 at the start of the year but dropped to No. 8 after a string of unimpressive results.
Malaysian juniors Vanessa Raj and Rachel Arnold also made steady progress, moving up to No. 65 and No. 72 respectively.
In the men’s rankings, veteran Ong Beng Hee moved up four rungs to No. 30.
