KANGAR: Federal Territories’ Ng Eain Yow feels that his opening match against Kelantan’s Mohd Syafiq Kamal in the Sukma squash men’s team final on Friday holds the key to determining the gold medallists.
Past matches between the two players have always been close, and the 16-year-old from Kuala Lumpur believes Friday’s tie at the State Sports Complex will be no different.
“Syafiq will start as the favourites in the final, but I relish the challenge to hand FT the opening point,” said Eain Yow.
“I beat him 3-1 in the group stage earlier this week, but then he was tired after playing in the singles final. I need to be at my best tomorrow because Syafiq will be fresher and will have revenge on his mind.”
On Thursday, Eain Yow put up a commanding performance to defeat Negri Sembilan’s Muhammad Hannan 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 to hand FT the first point in their semi-final.
Mohamad Amir Farhan sealed FT’s ticket to the final with an 11-5, 11-13, 11-4, 11-8 win over Bryan Lim.
Syafiq gained sweet revenge for his singles final defeat when he turned the tables on Sarawak’s Sanjay Singh in the other semi-final.
Syafiq took an 11-7, 11-5 lead before Sanjay retired with an ankle injury.
Mohd Farez Izwan delivered the winning point for Kelantan with an 11-7, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6 win over Jess Tay.
In the women’s semi-finals, FT’s Rachel Arnold also gained sweet revenge for her women’s singles final loss to Vanessa Raj of Penang.
Rachel was in an uncompromising mood as she beat Vanessa 11-4, 12-10, 11-9 in the opening tie.
Andrea Lee clinched the winning point for FT after coming from two sets down to beat Celine Yeap 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6.
The Kedah women overcame their top player S. Sivasangari’s defeat to overcome Selangor 2-1 in the other semi-final.
After Sivasangari had lost to Teh Min Jie, Nazihah Hanis and Aika Azman rose to the occasion to beat Jadeleen Lee and Teh Min En respectively and hand Kedah a first ever spot in a Sukma squash team event final.
