PETALING JAYA: Squash duo Ng Eain Yow and S. Sivasangari delivered the goods in the MSSM (national schools) squash championships at the SMK Seri Pagi squash courts in Negri Sembilan.
British Junior Open Under-17 runner-up Eain Yow easily swept aside Sabah’s Mohd Farez Izwan Mokhtar 11-8, 11-5, 14-12 to take the boys’ Under-18 crown to earn Federal Territory their solitary individual gold of the meet.
Semi-finalists Alwin Chai Yar Zhen of Selangor and Sarawak’s Ma Teck Leck were awarded the bronze.
Eain Yow combined with Mohd Aqif Ampandi and Nicholas Tan to help FT clinch the team gold. Sabah won the silver while Sarawak and Selangor took the bronze medal.
In the girls’ event, British Junior Under-15 champion Sivasangari of Kedah made it look easy against Sarawak’s Ma Si Yi, romping to an 11-5, 11-5, 11-3 victory for the gold.
Sivasangari, Aifa Azman and Nur Aliah Izzati Muhd Anis also took home the team gold to add to Kedah’s impressive haul of 12 medals – eight golds, two silvers and two bronzes – to emerge as the overall champions.
KL finished second with five medals (two golds, one silver, two bronzes) and Selangor third with eight medals (three silvers and five bronzes).
In golf, Selangor proved they’re a force to be reckoned with after emerging as the overall champions of the MSSM championships with a haul of 14 medals – six golds, two silvers and six bronzes.
The golds came from Amir Nazrin Jailani (boys’ Under-18), Marcus Lim Pang Chuen (boys’ Under-12), Allycia Gan Pheik Wen (girls’ Under-12), boys’ Under-18 as well as the boys’ and girls’ Under-12 teams at the Palm Resort & Golf and Country Club in Kulaijaya, Johor.
Johor were second with six medals – one gold courtesy of Loy Hee Ying in the girls’ Under-18 category – and five silvers. FT were third with four medals (two silvers and two bronzes).
In the archery competition at the Labuan Vocational College field in Labuan, Sabah, Nur Afisa Abdul Halil of Negri Sembilan was just one of two girl archers who managed to set new championship records.
Afisa set a new record in the girls’ Under-18 category (50m) with a total score of 1,223 en route to the gold medal.
Sabah’s Caroline Fread finished with the silver (1,189) followed by Penang’s Loke Shin Hui in third (1,170).
Perak’s Sufi Afiqah Qistina Zamanhuri was the other record breaker in the girls’ Under-12 category.
She shot 1,308 to break the old record set by Terengganu’s Aqilah Pathoo Raman to win the gold ahead of Kedah duo Aisya Zulaika Abdullah (1,254) and Nur Faizatul Aqilah Nor Zaini (1,250).
