PETALING JAYA: World No. 1 Nicol David remains firmly on course for her fourth straight title of the year after besting old foe Natalie Grinham to make the final of the China Open at Shanghai on Saturday.
The 30-year-old who boasts an impressive head-to-head record against Grinham, winning 28 of their previous 35 meetings, was just too strong once again as she won 13-11, 12-10, 11-6.
Grinham who was impressive in beating world No. 4 Alison Waters of England in the quarter-finals, gave Nicol a close fight in the first two sets.
But Nicol dug deep as usual before eventually sealing her win.
“Got past Natalie 3-0 in the semis. Close first two but got through in the end. Looks like I'll be facing Raneem (El Weleily) and I'm definitely looking forward to it,” the Penangite shared on Twitter.
It was her third win over the 35-year-old Grinham this year, having also beaten the Dutchwoman in the World Series Finals and the World Games final.
With her current form, it will be hard to see Nicol falling in the final, as she seeks to add to her Malaysian, Carol Weymuller and US Open titles this year.
Nicol however will have her work cut out for her as she will face world No. 3 Raneem in the final.
The talented Egyptian had just a few more tricks in her bag as she defeated fourth seed Joelle King of New Zealand 3-1.
An advantage for Nicol is the fact that she has beaten Raneem twice recently, in the Malaysian Open final and the semi-finals of the Carol Weymuller meet.
Elsewhere, Malaysia’s top men’s players – Ong Beng Hee and Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan – will be up against Egyptian opponents in the first round of the Men’s World Championships in Manchester when they take to the courts on Saturday.
