No problem. Malaysia's Nicol David is in the quarter-finals of the US Open squash championship after beating France's Camille Serme in Philadelphia on Sunday.
KUALA LUMPUR: Seven-time world champion Nicol David was given a run for her money by world No. 10 Camille Serme of France before reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open squash championships at the Drexel University in Philadelphia on Sunday.
The 30-year-old defending champion and top seeded Malaysian won 11-9, 11-5, 11-4 in 36 minutes for her eighth win over the Frenchwoman.
Serme started off well by taking an 8-6 lead in the first set before Nicol fought back to win 11-9.
Serme also put up a spirited display in the second and third sets but the Penang-born Nicol showed why she is the undisputed world No. 1 by winning the two sets.
Nicol, who beat Serme in straight sets in the Carol Weymuller Open final in New York last week, will face eighth seed Madeline Perry of Ireland for a place in the semi-finals.
The 36-year-old Perry, ranked ninth in the world, came back from a set down to beat Line Hansen of Denmark 7-11, 11-2, 11-3, 11-8 in 41 minutes.
“I was really pumped up for this, ready to give my best,” said David. “We played last week and she was playing really well, so I knew she would be fired up for it. I managed to settle down and get into my game but it wasn’t easy as she played really well,” said Nicol.
Fourth seed Alison Waters of England was made to slog for 58 minutes by Donna Urquhart of Australia before prevailing with a hard-fought 8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 9-11, 12-10 win.
Waters will face Kiwi Joelle King, last year’s losing semi-finalist, in the quarter-finals. King eliminated Sarah Kippax of England 11-9, 11-4, 11-7 in 31 minutes.
In the men’s competition, France’s Mathieu Castagnet created a major upset by beating world No. 9 and seventh seed Borja Golan of Spain 11-7, 9-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8 in an epic 105-minute second round encounter.
