Delia Arnold (left) lost to Rachael Grinham of Australia, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9, in the IJM Land Penang Women’s Open semi-finals on Oct 11, 2013.
GEORGE TOWN: A slow start put paid to Delia Arnold’s hopes of qualifying for the final of the IJM Land Penang Women’s Open squash tournament at the Nicol David International Squash Centre on Friday.
The national No. 3, who failed to get going in the first two sets of her semi-final against top seed Rachael Grinham of Australia, lost 11-7, 11-5, 11-9 in 40 minutes.
Fourth seed Delia only found her rhythm in the third set to trouble the Australian.
However, Malaysia’s lone representative in the Penang Open semi-finals failed to capitalise on a 7-2 lead, allowing her opponent to catch up and seal the match.
“I just could not figure out Rachael’s play in the first two sets. Before I could really settle down, I was already two sets down. I tried to fight back in the third set, but it was too late to save myself,” said a disappointed Delia.
“I wanted to reach the final here, but unfortunately I lost to a better player today. I will now focus on next week’s Macau Open, where I will take on a qualifier in the first round.”
The 36-year-old former world champion Grinham will take on third seed Emma Beddoes in Saturday’s title match.
The English player stunned second seed and defending champion Joshna Chinappa of India 11-5, 11-5, 9-11, 12-10 to book her spot in the final.
World No. 16 Grinham admitted that she was impressed with the 30th-ranked Beddoes’ fine run in Penang this week.
“I have forgotten when was the last time I last played Emma, but she is a totally improved player now. She is in good shape this week and has shown against Joshna that she can win the long rallies,” said Grinham.
“I will be happy just to put on my best game in the final, regardless of the result.”
Grinham’s only previous appearance in the Penang Open ended in a final defeat to home favourite Nicol David in 2006.
