Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan checks with the referee during his first-round Royal Lake Club Open match against Peter Creed. He went on to beat Creed 12-10, 13-15, 11-4, 11-5.
KUALA LUMPUR: Fresh from a honeymoon break, national No. 2 Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan is eager to bag his second title of the year.
The world No. 33 was up to the task as he put in a consistent shift to down Welsh world No. 73 Peter Creed in the first round of the Royal Lake Club Open squash championships on Wednesday.
Nafiizwan, who tied the knot in August, was just too strong for Creed, winning 12-10, 13-15, 11-4, 11-5.
The Terengganu-born player, who won the Irish Open in April, will take on Austria’s Aqeel Rehman in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Rehman came back from two sets down to edge Swiss Reiko Peter 9-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-5.
“It was a short honeymoon with my wife in the Maldives, but it was one that I needed to spend some time with her,” said the 27-year-old Nafiizwan.
“Now I’m fresher and recharged. I want to win this title before the season gets tougher.
“I haven’t played at the Royal Lake Club since I was 15, so I needed some time to get my rhythm.
“Peter played well in the first two sets but I guess I was more consistent and I made it hard for him to keep up in the end.
“As for Aqeel, I know his game because he trains with (Ong) Beng Hee under Dave Pearson at Harrogate and I know how to deal with him,” added Nafiizwan.
It was, however, heartbreak for youngster Mohd Addeen Idrakie. He came within a whisker of securing a famous win over Asian Games silver medallist Aamir Atlas Khan of Pakistan. The 19-year-old Addeen lost 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4, 6-11.
National No. 4 Ivan Yuen and former international Elvinn Keo also reached the second round.
Ivan was a class above 17-year-old qualifier Mohd Syafiq Kamal, winning 11-3, 11-5, 11-6.
Elvinn also had it easy, eliminating India’s Ravi Dixit 11-2, 11-8, 12-10.
Top seed Ong Beng Hee also came through by beating Malaysian youngster Sanjay Singh Chal 11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 11-5.
