PETALING JAYA: Promising youngster Sanjay Singh Chal has one target in mind when he competes in the Royal Lake Club Open squash championships – to claim the scalp of national No. 1 Ong Beng Hee.
The tournament begins Monday.
The 19-year-old Sanjay has made steady progress since linking up with the senior team earlier this year, rising 24 rungs in the October rankings to a career high No. 163 in the world.
The Sarawakian, however, is still seeking a breakthrough in his career and views the Royal Lake Club Open as the perfect stage for it.
But Sanjay, who received a wildcard for the main draw, will have his work cut out for him as he will be up against world No. 23 Beng Hee in the first round.
Sanjay, who almost defeated national No. 3 Mohd Asyraf Azan in the Malaysian Open last month, aims to take advantage of the draw by going for the kill against Beng Hee.
He will be boosted by the fact that Beng Hee is on a poor run on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour, having suffered three consecutive first round defeats – at the Colombian Open, Maharashtra State Open in Bombay and the Malaysian Open.
“I’ve made good progress this year and getting to a career high ranking this month is a sign of improvement,” said Sanjay. “It’s a good boost to my career and I want to keep going.
“It won’t be easy against Beng Hee, who has a lot of experience but with his current form, perhaps there is a chance that I can sneak in an upset.
“I just need to be patient and go for the kill at the right time.”
Besides Beng Hee and Sanjay, three other Malaysians – Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan, Ivan Yuen and Elvinn Keo – will also be in the main draw.
The tournament, however, has been hit by the withdrawals of Egyptians Omar Abdel Meguid and Mazen Hesham Ga Sabry, the third and fourth seeds respectively.
