Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan crashed out of the CIMB Malaysian Open when he was outclassed by Peter Barker 8-11, 0-11, 11-7, 2-11.
PETALING JAYA: National No. 2 Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan’s run in the CIMB Malaysian Open came to an end after he was outclassed by Peter Barker in the quarter-finals at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara on Friday.
The 27-year-old Nafiizwan made his mark on Thursday with a superb win over national No. 1 Ong Beng Hee.
But Nafiizwan, ranked No. 32 in the world, was clearly no match for world No. 7 Barker, losing 8-11, 0-11, 11-7, 2-11 despite a gallant fightback in the third set.
“Well, I would say it’s a disappointing result to say the least,” said Nafiizwan.
“I was positive coming into this match but Barker was just too sharp ... especially in the second set in which 80% of his shots were right on target.
“He kept me pinned back in the back court most of the time and I was just trying so hard to break his rhythm ... but it didn’t work.
“But he’s a top-eight player and he definitely did play like one. Maybe I’ll have my break next time,” added Nafiizwan, who will turn his focus to the Royal Lake Open from Oct 7-12.
Barker, a quarter-finalist in 2006, will next face third seed Borja Golan of Spain in the last four.
World No. 9 Golan came through victorious in a 104-minute match against Egypt’s Karim Abdel Gawad, winning 8-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-5.
“That was a really tough match. I was actually worried that I had Karim in my draw ... he is a very energetic player,” explained Golan.
“The first three sets were close and I think both of us got tired after the hour mark.
“Fortunately, I stayed strong mentally to pull myself through and I’m definitely looking forward to the semi-finals. But first, I need to recover,” added Golan.
Meanwhile, defending champion Tarek Momen strolled through by blasting compatriot Mazen Hesham 11-3, 11-9, 11-6 in just 20 minutes.
“I think I was controlling the game and everything went my way. It was definitely my day and probably Mazen was still tired from yesterday’s match,” said Momen.
In other results, 26-year-old Chris Simpson came up with a massive performance to beat India’s Saurav Ghosal 6-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-9.
Simpson who had to cancel his flight home after unexpectedly beating top seed Karim Darwish in the first round, will meet defending champion Momen for a place in the final.
