PETALING JAYA: England’s world No. 7 Peter Barker has not played in Malaysia for a long time but he admits that he still has fond memories of his last visit here.
That was in 2009 when the 30-year-old Londoner won the Kuala Lumpur Open.
Yesterday though, Barker, fresh from winning the Colombian Open last month, demonstrated that he’s still very much one of the in-form players in the world as he marched into the semi-finals of the CIMB Malaysian Open at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara.
The left-handed Barker, built on a strong start and superb second set to vanquish the hopes of national No. 2 Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan 11-8, 11-0, 7-11, 11-2 in 56 minutes.
“I’ve played Nafiizwan a few times and it’s usually 3-0 but always a tough match. This was no different,” said Barker.
“Even though I won the second set 11-0, it was by no means a thrashing as Nafiizwan was making his shots ... he just hit the tin too often.
“But it’s really good to be back in Malaysia. I have really good memories here ... with winning the KL Open back in 2009.
“Unfortunately I couldn’t come back to compete in the KL Open because it clashed with the Canary Whaft Classic which was held in London.
“As a Londoner I just couldn’t miss that event.
“Still, it’s nice to come back to Malaysia especially since we get to play in a nice shopping mall,” added Barker.
With top seed and world No. 5 Karim Darwish knocked out in the first round on Thursday, Barker appears to be a favourite for the men’s title.
First though, Barker will need to navigate past the challenge of Spanish world No. 9 Borja Golan in the semi-finals.
