Laura Masssaro: 'I’d say that (getting to No. 1 is) one of my goals ... it would be amazing to achieve it but it’s not exactly high on my priority list now.'
KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 2 Laura Massaro is happy to be back in Malaysia.
The 30-year-old Massaro stunned the Malaysian crowd in March when she took out world No. 1 Nicol David in the semi-finals of the KL Open.
She went on to win the title by beating compatriot Alison Waters in the final.
In May, Massaro again came up tops against Nicol, beating her in four sets to capture the British Open.
On Wednesday, Massaro, who has firmly emerged as Nicol’s main challenger, was barely troubled as she disposed of American Latasha Khan 11-5, 11-5, 11-6 in just 25 minutes in the first round.
“It’s definitely good to be back. The court was hot but we had a few good rallies and Latasha did pretty well too,” said Massaro.
“It’s also nice to be back where I got some good results back in March.
“I’ve got a couple of wins over Nicol already ... the last was in May. I’m hoping to get a few more wins here.”
Massaro also revealed that her goal is to replace Nicol as the world No. 1 “although it’s not my main priority right now”.
“It’s difficult to answer whether I’m aiming to be the world No. 1,” said Massaro.
“I’d say that it’s one of my goals ... it would be amazing to achieve it but it’s not exactly high on my priority list now.
“For now, this is my first tournament in a while and I’m just excited to be back on tour and playing. It’s better to take things easy and focus on one thing at a time.”
Massaro will face surprise package Nicolette Fernandes of Guyana for a place in the quarter-finals.
Fernandes, who came through the qualifying round, stunned 15th seed Donna Urquhart of Australia 11-3, 11-7, 11-8 in 31 minutes.
