KUALA LUMPUR: It’s not easy living in the shadows of world No. 1 Nicol David and world No. 6 Low Wee Wern.
But national No. 3 Delia Arnold is fine with it as she seeks to perfect her own game.
The 27-year-old Delia enjoyed a fine run at the TC National Championships Friday, powering past national junior Teh Min Jie to make it to the semi-finals.
World No. 32 Delia was given a good run out by Min Jie before prevailing 11-6, 11-3, 11-5.
And Delia believes that she’s getting back her rhythm after a rather poor year and she aims to put on an even better show when she goes up against Nicol in the last four.
The top seed and seven-time world champion had another easy day, cruising past national junior Aika Azman 11-5, 11-4, 11-4.
“It was a good test against Min Jie because she is so fast and picks up everything,” said Delia. “I’m definitely playing a lot better now ... my shots are sharper too, so hopefully my form will pick up soon.
“It’ll be tough against Nicol because I don’t usually get to play against her. When I was a junior, she was already training in Amsterdam ... so the only times I met her were at tournaments.
“Well, I usually lose 3-0 to Nicol anyway ... but maybe I’ll get something this time.
“The last time I faced Nicol was in the final of the 2011 Nationals ... that was also the best I’ve played against Nicol. So, hopefully, I can do something good again this time.”
In other matches, defending champion Wee Wern took less than 20 minutes to dispose of P. Pushppa Devi 11-4, 11-1, 11-3.
Wee Wern will face Zulhijjah Azan for a place in the final.
Zulhijjah came back strongly from two sets down to beat former national player Sharon Wee 6-11, 11-13, 13-11, 11-8, 11-5.
“I definitely felt more comfortable on court today compared to the first round,” said Wee Wern. “It’ll be good to get back on the glass court because I haven’t played in one for quite a while.”
