KANGAR: National shooters Eddy Chew and Choo Wen Yan got the perfect send-off to the World Cup Shooting Championships in Munich by winning the Sukma men’s 10m air pistol team gold medal at the Sungai Batu Pahat Shooting Range.
Eddy, 19, and Wen Yan, 20, will both depart for Munich on Tuesday to compete in the 10m air pistol and 50m free pistol events in the World Cup, which starts on Wednesday.
On Monday, the duo combined with the 15-year-old Hazeq Haqeem Azmi to gun down 1677 points and bag the gold medal for Johor. Their total was a mere three points shy of the Sukma record set by the Pahang team in Kuantan two years ago.
It was the second gold medal in Perlis for Eddy and Wen Yan, after they had combined with Nor Afiffudin Nordin to win the 50m free pistol team gold for Johor on Friday.
“This is the perfect morale booster for Eddy and me ahead of competing in the World Cup,” said Wen Yan.
“After bagging the 50m free pistol team gold, we were the favourites to win today, and we did not disappoint.”
Myanmar SEA Games gold medallist Eddy said there was a tinge of sadness that the Johor shooters failed to get a podium finish in the individual competition of Monday’s event.
Wen Yan was the best finisher in fourth position on 564, just one point behind bronze medallist Jasmi Zin of Negri Sembilan.
Eddy was sixth with 560 while Hazeq was placed 10th on 553.
Selangor’s Rishipal Singh Dhanoa took the gold with a 569 finish, and Perak’s Siau Zianyi the silver on 566, with only nine points separating the top six finishers.
“After winning a silver in the 50m free pistol individual event last week, I was hoping to add another individual medal. But it was a tight finish, with every slight error proving to be costly.
“Wen Yan and I missed out on the medal places by a narrow margin,” said Eddy.
