Better late than never for shooter Cuili

KANGAR: After failing to win an individual medal in her two previous Sukma outings, Perak shooter Siau Cuili would have settled for a medal of any colour in Perlis.

However, the 20-year-old from Menglembu hit the bull’s-eye in her third and final Sukma appearance by shooting down the women’s 10m air pistol gold and breaking the meet record at the Sungai Batu Pahat Shooting Range.

Cuili collected 380 points to erase the previous record of 375 set by Federal Territories’ Siti Sarah Ibrahim at the Penang Sukma in 2000.

Selangor’s Nur Zunaira Zakaria took the silver with a 370 total while FT’s Nurul Aina Fatihah settled for the bronze on 368.

“I knew that I would be a contender for a medal, but I did not expect to break the Games record en route to winning the gold,” said national back-up squad shooter Cuili.

“I have not shot a 380 before today. I am glad that I managed to perform beyond expectations when it mattered the most.

“I still harbour hopes of breaking into the national team, and hope I to improve on my results to be selected to represent Malaysia at major championships.”

Cuili, who got involved with shooting since 13, was disappointed that Perak failed to win a medal in the 10m air pistol team event.

Despite Cuili’s 380 points, she and her team-mates Nurul Fatihah Tahir (354) and Najihah Halim (332) could only finish fourth with a 1,066 total, four points behind third-placed Negri Sembilan.

Selangor won the gold with a 1,088 haul. FT finished second on 1,074.

“It was heartbreaking to miss out on the bronze by a mere four points. But I still have the 25m air pistol tomorrow (today) to look forward to. I hope to leave the Sukma scene by delivering another gold.”

Pahang won three of the six golds on offer on Sunday.

Low Wei Chern won the men’s 25m standard pistol event and teamed up with Mohd Aiman Aisamuddin and Abdul Aziz Malek to win the team gold.

Mohamad Nurrahimin completed a hat-trick of triumphs for Pahang by winning the men’s 50m rifle prone individual category.
