Sabahan Denis Ejoh won the men’s 10m air pistol gold in the Tun Tan Siew Sin Trophy with 196.80 points.
PETALING JAYA: Veteran Denis Ejoh proved that age is not a stumbling block to success when he outshot several youngsters to win the men’s 10m air pistol gold in the Tun Tan Siew Sin Trophy at the Subang Shooting Range.
The 46-year-old Armed Forces shooter qualified for the final in third place with a score of 567. In the final, the unflappable Denis accumulated 196.80 points to finish first on Saturday.
Johnathan Wong of Malacca took the silver with a score of 193.10 while Rishipal Singh Dhanoa of Selangor finished third with 174.30 points.
“I’m proud to win the gold. During my training yesterday, my score was quite good and I was able to bring over that confidence into the final,” said Denis.
Denis, who took up shooting seven years ago, did well in 2009 and 2010 but failed to shine in recent times. The serviceman with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) was on duty abroad in 2011 and was not able to compete in the local tournaments.
“In 2012, my best achievement was winning a gold and several bronzes in a series of local tournaments. I also participated in the South-East Asian Shooting Association (SEASA) Championships in 2013,” he said.
“When I am on duty with the Air Force, I don’t have much time for training. In fact, I only managed to get two days of training in preparation of this tournament,” said Denis.
“This year, I aim to compete in all the local tournaments. I hope to represent the country in the major events this year like the Commonwealth Games.
“Based on my performances so far, I still have to improve my shooting to clinch a berth in the national team. I need to put in more hours of training. I shot 567 in the qualifying rounds today and was seven shots away from the qualifying score of 574 for the Commonwealth Games,” added the Sabahan.
