Time for Rodgers to get a new contract

COMPARING what Brendan Rodgers has achieved this season at Liverpool is truly amazing.

Last season, Liverpool finished seventh in the table with 61 points. There are nine games to go this season and Rodgers’ men have 62 points. His Liverpool team have also scored more goals so far this season than the whole of last year.

The turnaround has been faster than anyone imagined. The crushing victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford last week was a statement game for the legitimacy of Rodgers’ Liverpool and the ability the team possess.

With just over a year left in Rodgers’ contract with Liverpool, his turnaround of the club means he deserves a new contract. The all round improvement in the squad means he does deserve a contract and given the shaky ground many managers are on this season, having the stability Rodgers brings to the squad and the way they play on the pitch is such a luxury to have.

Many fans feel the club have struck the lottery with the appointment of Rodgers and they have every right to feel that way. For years, Liverpool have toiled under a fractious relationship between manager and owner, and it’s the last couple of seasons that things appear to settle.

Fenway Sports Group has been careful about splashing the cash and the approach of Rodgers has been to do with what he has. Mamadou Sakho was the big money signing this season but the victory at Old Trafford was achieved with men that were around last season.

Continuity will have helped Rodgers achieve the results so far but that’s also down to the gradual improvement of the players in the squad under his stewardship. That’s another reason why Rodgers deserves a new contract.

Maybe the performances have also been down to a lack of pressure. Expectations were lowered after finishing seventh last season, and the brief was to qualify for European competition next season, preferably the Champions League.

Surprisingly, the club appears to be bang on track for that and the icing on the cake is there is a legitimate chance of Liverpool winning the league this season.

I know it’s a tall order but after demolishing Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend, Liverpool are the form team in the top four right now.

The trick now is to keep that going for the next nine games, and in all honesty, it gets a little tricky in Saturday’s game.

Cardiff City are fighting against relegation and will give their all against Liverpool On Saturday. Liverpool need to concentrate and not take this game lightly. Doing so will show the team’s intent and ability for going for the biggest prize fans have been waiting for a long time.

Jagdev Singh Sidhu thinks Liverpool will snare three points on Saturday in a keenly fought game.
