KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah Eagles successfully defended the Guinness Jonah Jones Sevens rugby title after beating NS Wanderers in the final at the Royal Selangor Club in Bukit Kiara on Sunday.
The Super League final ended 19-19 in full time, forcing the game into a sudden-death try. Fijian Isoa Turuva turned hero for the Eagles, picking up a loose ball for the winning try.
It was another year of heartache for Wanderers. They were also beaten by Eagles in last year’s final.
Eagles coach Francis Stowers breathed a sigh of relief after Turuva’s try.
“It was a typical final where both sides were really pushing it to the limit. We tried to tightened our defence but credit to them (Wanderers) as they played well today,” said Stowers.
“We started our campaign a bit slow, losing to Keris Conlay (14-26) on Saturday. But the boys managed to improve their game to reach the final.”
It was a closely contested five-team Super League with Wanderers, Eagles and Keris winning three out of their four matches to sit equal on nine points. Eagles took the top spot as they had 16 tries while Wanderers pipped Keris for the spot in the final by one try (10 to nine).
Meanwhile, Serdang Angels took home the club competition trophy after beating Tengku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) 26-7 in the final.
