Malaysian Wushu Federation could face sanctions over unreturned medal

INCHEON: The Malaysian Wushu Federation (MWF) and Tai Cheau Xuen could face sanctions from the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) if the gold medal is not returned to the Incheon Asian Games organisers.

Cheau Xuen has been tested positive for drugs and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) have stripped her of the gold she won in the women’s nanquan and nandao all-round event on Sept 20.

OCA media manager Jeans Zhou Jian said Cheau Xuen was told to return the gold before she returned to Malaysia.

“As of now, that medal she has is of no value. Her name will be deleted from the winners’ list and the Malaysian medal tally will be updated. For now, it is just an error that the medal tally does not reflect the change,” he said.

Zhou Jian said they would contact the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) to take the gold back from Cheau Xuen.

“If she still insists on keeping the gold, we will inform the IWUF and they can sanction the Malaysian association as well as the athlete,” he added.

With Cheau Xuen’s disqualification, Indonesia’s Juwita Nisa Wasni is now the gold medallist with her compatriot Ivana Ardelia Irmanto taking the silver and Tsai Wen Chuan of Taiwan the bronze.

Zhou Jian said they would issue a new gold medal to Juwita.

“There is no issue with that. We will not wait for the Malaysian to return the medal,” he said.
