June Wei still in the hunt for a medal despite loss

Despite losing in the boys

PETALING JAYA: Cheam June Wei bowed out of the boys’ singles quarter-finals at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in China, but his hope of returning home with a medal remains alive.

The 17-year-old failed to live up to his billing as the world No. 7 junior, going down 22-20, 18-21, 12-21 to India’s Aditya Joshi in Nanjing yesterday.

But June Wei made a smashing return an hour later to win the mixed doubles’ last-eight tie with Ng Tsz Yau of Hong Kong. They defeated the Malaysia-Taiwan pairing of Lee Ying Ying-Lu Chia-hung 21-16, 21-19 to book a spot in the semi-finals against the Thailand-China combination of Mek Narongrit-Qin Jingjing.

At the Nanjing OSC Stadium, Mohd Rizzua Haizad Muhd, who competed in Heat 3, was disqualified in the 110m hurdles.

Norshafiee Mohd Shah also failed to impress in the high jump. Despite having a personal best of 2.10m, he could only manage to clear 2.03m to place 12th out of 15 contestants in the qualifying round.

In taekwondo, M. Mohana Priya failed to get past his first hurdle. She was handed a 15-1 thrashing by Colombia’s Debbie Natalia Yosapa Gomez in the quarter-finals.

In golf, Low Khai Jie and Kan Kah Yan can count themselves out of medal contention as there are only 18 holes left to play.

Khai Jie could only manage a two-over 74 in the second round at the Zhongshan International Golf Club for a 144 total to be joint 13th with four other players in the boys’ event.

Kah Yan fared a little better in yesterday’s round. She shot a 74 for a 153 total to move up four rungs to joint 24th out of 30 golfers.
