Paddler Sock Khim down but not out yet

GLASGOW: Veteran paddler Ng Sock Khim is down but definitely not out after losing her mixed doubles match in the second round of the Commonwealth Games at the Scotstoun Sports Campus.

The 31-year-old Sock Khim and Foo Dun Ley had no problem beating Alan Resture-Kaimalie Resture of Tuvalu 11-3, 11-2, 11-4 in the first round.

But in the second round they were beaten by Australians Yan Xin-Zhang Ziyu 5-11, 11-7, 7-11, 5-11.

Sock Khim, who won a silver in the women’s team event, said that she was not sad about losing in the mixed doubles event.

“We were just unlucky to face the Australians in the second round.

“However, I will now focus on my challenge in the singles and doubles events,” said Sock Khim, who underwent four knee surgeries in five years.

Three other Malaysian mixed doubles players had no problems reaching the third round.

Mohd Shakirin Ibrahim-Beh Lee Wei, who received a bye in the first round, disposed of Nicholas Esther-Laura Sinon of Seychelles 11-3, 11-4, 11-7 to set up a date with top seeds Zhan Jian-Feng Tianwei of Singapore next.

Lee Wei said it would be tough to beat Singapore’s China-born players.

“But nothing is impossible. We will try our best to create an upset,” said the 31-year-old mother.

Mohd Ashraf Haiqal-Lee Rou You will also face Singaporean rivals – Clarence Chew-Isabele Li - in the third round.

The Malaysian pair received a bye in the first round and defeated Romano Spencer-Unica Velox of St Vincent and Grenadines 11-3, 11-7, 11-3 in the second round.

The fourth Malaysian mixed pair of Leong Chee Feng-Ho Ying, who also received a bye in the first round, defeated Sri Lanka’s Udaya Ranasingha-Erandi Warusawithana 12-10, 12-10, 11-5 in the second round.

They will take on India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta-Sahmini Kumaresan for a place in the fourth round.
