PETALING JAYA: Weightlifter Constantine Clement Awos is in a race against time to compete in the 17th Sukma (Malaysia Games) in Perlis from May 24-June 4.
The Sabahan injured his back, the fourth lumbar vertebrae, during national training late last month in Gunung Jerai, Kedah. He is now undergoing physiotherapy treatment in Kota Kinabalu.
“I’m definitely getting better. The pain has lessened compared to last week and I’ve resumed training. I hope to be 100% fit as the Sukma is just 10 days away,” said Constantine who competes in the men’s 62kg category.
There is a lot riding on the shoulders of the 20-year-old from Tambunan. He has never medalled at the Games and this is his last chance as the cut-off age for athletes competing at the Sukma is 21 and he’s hoping to make his final bow count at the largest multi-sport event in the country.
And what’s more is that he is likely to be named in the 15-member national team to compete in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games from July 23-Aug 3.
“At the last Sukma (in 2012) in Pahang, I crashed in both the snatch and clean and jerk. I didn’t even end up on the podium,” lamented Constantine.
“But at that time, I was still training in Sabah and not with the national team. I think winning the gold this time is not too far-fetched a goal because I’ve improved a whole lot since then. I think I can outlift the other lifters in my category in Perlis,” added Constantine whose personal best is 120kg in the snatch and 154kg in the clean and jerk.
“The Sukma will be my final competition before Glasgow, so I’d love to do well. The only thing standing in my way is the injury.
“That’s the only thing that worries me ... it is my last chance to win a medal at the Sukma and it would be great to deliver a medal for Sabah. I just hope I can pull off a great performance on the day and that everything will all work out fine.”
The weightlifting competition will take place at the Institute Kemahiran Belia Negara in Kuala Perlis from May 27- June 3.
