Lifters told to perform to win Commonwealth Games ticket

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) have thrown down the gauntlet to the development squad lifters to prove themselves in order to win a Glasgow Commonwealth Games ticket.

The challenge comes ahead of the National Championships in Kota Baru, Kelantan, from Feb 17-20.

The meet will be used as the selection trial to pick the squad for the Commonwealth Games which is from July 23-Aug 4.

“Our focus, as always, is to assemble the best team. We’ve always had a good record at the Games and we want to keep that going in Glasgow,” said MWF secretary-general Pang Siew Huat.

“We want to promote healthy competition and to provide them with an incentive to try and raise their performance. It will be a great test for them to try and make the team. If they can beat the seniors and prove that they’re good enough to make the team, they deserve a spot on the team,” he added.

The number of lifters for the squad will be decided after the championships, when the MWF will focus on building a team with depth and quality.

Traditionally, Malaysia have been strong performers in the weightlifting competition, almost always returning with medals since the sport was introduced at the Auckland Games in 1950. They came back empty-handed on only four occasions – 1966, 1970, 1974 and 1978.

Their best performance came at the Manchester Games in 2002 when they amassed an impressive haul of nine medals – three golds and six bronzes. Malaysia’s medal hopes lie on 23-year-olds Mohd Hafifi Mansor (men’s 69kg) and Azizah Fadzil (women’s -53kg).

Based on the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation rankings, Mohd Hafifi is currently the top ranked male in his category while Azizah is currently ranked second in her category.
