KUALA LUMPUR: Four associations will appeal to the SEA Games Federation for the inclusion of their sports in the 2015 Games to be held in Singapore.
The four sports are weightlifting, volleyball, karate and chess.
The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) have approved the appeals received from the Malaysia Karate Federation, Malaysia Weightlifting Federation, Malaysia Volleyball Association and Malaysian Chess Federation for their sports to be included in the 28th SEA Games programme.
OCM secretary general Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said on Tuesday they will now forward the appeals to the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC).
“If accepted, then the SEA Games Federation sports and rules committee will decide when they meet in Singapore on Feb 15,” said Kok Chi, who added the host country would normally pick events in which they can win medals.
“So long as they stick to the Games’ regulations, there is very little we can do about it. Each NOC will have their reasons for wanting certain sports in the SEA Games. But, at the end of the day, the host nation will have a big say in the number of sports they are willing to host.”
For now, the SNOC have 30 sports for the Games, which will be held from June 5-16, 2015. They are aquatics, athletics, sailing, table tennis, canoeing, bowling, wushu, fencing, netball, gymnastics, billiards and snooker, hockey, softball, waterskiing, golf, football, shooting, badminton, cycling, tennis, pencak silat, sepaktakraw, rugby, basketball, traditional boat race, archery, triathlon, judo, taekwondo and squash.
But the number is set to increase by at least one as petanque has been accepted.
Kok Chi said that the petanque venue was ready and Singapore agreed for it to be included during a meeting at the Myanmar SEA Games in December.
For Malaysia, the loss of karate will be greatly felt as it is a regular contributor of medals for the country.
At the Myanmar Games, karate contributed seven gold, three silver and five bronze medals.
