NAYPYITAW: The Mighty Thor is human, after all.

The burly Thor Chuan Leong (pic) showed his softer side when he burst into tears after pulling off a Houdini act by coming back from 4-1 down to beat Laos’ Sithideth Sakbieng 5-4 in a thrilling men’s snooker singles final at the Wunna Theikdi Billiards and Snooker Hall on Sunday.

Down 4-1, Chuan Leong decided to walk out of the hall for a while to regroup – and that proved to be the turning point.

He returned with so much fire and fervour that he won four consecutive frames – hitting the pockets with such accuracy and confidence.

When he finally nicked the country’s first gold medal for snooker and billiards, Chuan Leong could not help but squeal in delight and rush into the arms of coach Ong Sze Wey – with tears running down his cheek.

“I thought my hope of winning a gold was gone after giving my opponent a four-frame cushion,” said Chuan Leong.

“After trailing 4-1, I walked out of the hall for a breather.

“I was lost and didn’t know what to do. But my team-mates, coaches and officials consoled and comforted me. They told me to stay calm and just play my game. And that’s what I did ... just went back in and played my game.

“And when I won, I could not believe it ... I just could not hold my emotions. I did not want to cry but the tears kept rolling down my face.”

He was also happy that he had beaten Thai top seed Supoj Saenla 5-2 in the quarter-finals and silenced local star Min Khaing Min Aye 5-1 in the semi-finals, despite the vociferous home fans.

“I have never beaten these players before ... so, this gold medal is special,” said Chuan Leong, who failed to defend his snooker doubles with Moh Keen Hoo two days ago.

Team manager Iskandar Perwira Putra said Chuan Leong’s win was a boost for the association, who are starting all over again after serving a two-year suspension imposed by the Sports Commissioner.

“His fantastic win is a good start for us. We came here with a one-gold target and we have achieved it. We hope that this will be a good start for the new association,” said Iskandar.
