NAYPYITAW: A chubby Thor Chuan Leong is a bad boy turned good.

And on Friday, he will try to be the hero once again for Malaysia’s snooker team when he gets into action in the doubles event with his cool partner – Moh Keen Hoo at the Wunna Theikdi Billiard and Snooker Hall.

The 25-year-old Chuan Leong stole the thunder at the last SEA Games in Palembang when he combined superbly with veteran Sam Chong to win the doubles gold.

This time, he is determined to strike it right with his new partner Keen Hoo – another “veteran” of the game.

The 27-year-old Keen Hoo was the 2007 Korat SEA Games gold medallist and Thailand Open champion but he has been out of the picture for some time and just returned after the Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation was reinstated in July following a one-year suspension.

Chuan Leong cannot believe he has come this far after initially getting into trouble because of snooker.

“I was 14 years old when I picked up the sport. I used to skip school to play the game but one day, my mother found out and chased me with the rest stick inside the snooker centre,” chuckled Chuan Leong.

“A year later, I took up the sport seriously. I was inspired by the national athletes then and wanted to represent the country. At 19 years old, I made my SEA Games debut and now, I will be competing in my fourth edition of the Games.”

Chuan Leong said he had a knack for raising his game with experienced partners.

“I did it with Sam Chong and now, I want to repeat the feat with Keen Hoo. Keen Hoo is very experienced and I am challenged to live up to his expectations.

“Hopefully, both of us will be able to defend the gold in this event and give billiards and snooker a pleasant start at the SEA Games,” added Chuan Leong, who will also be taking part in the singles – the 15 balls red and the 6 balls red events.

Malaysia will be involved in a total of 14 events during the billiards and snooker competition and three gold medals are expected from them.

The others in the team besides Chuan Leong and Keen Hoo are Tan Kah Thiam, Ibrahim Amir and women athletes Suhana Dewi Sabtu and Klaudia Djajalie.
