Malaysia's Lee Yang may be nursing a sore knee but that will not stop him form giving his best in the 12th World Wushu Championships at the KLBA Stadium in Cheras starting Friday.
KUALA LUMPUR: Wushu exponent Lee Yang’s knees are hurting but he is not giving up the chance to strut his stuff on homeground at the World Wushu Championships starting at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium on Friday.
The 28-year-old is one of two exponents in the current team who have tasted glory at the world meet before.
Lee Yang bagged the gold in men’s taijiquan at the 2009 world meet in Toronto but he missed out on securing a medal at the Guangzhou Asian Games the following year.
Lee Yang, however, showed he has regained his previous form by taking silver in the combined taijijian and taijiquan at the World Games in Cali in August this year.
The strain on the knees is certainly not welcome at this crucial time and the pony-tailed Lee Yang was seen yesterday applying ice packs to lessen the pain.
But Lee Yang allays any fears that he will not be able to compete.
”It is nothing that I cannot handle. I have issues with my knees but it is common in our sport.
”In the taiji discipline, the movements are slow but we put a lot of pressure on our knees.
”In fact, I think any athlete in every sport will not escape having some form of injury.
”My injury is manageable,” said Lee Yang, who is determined to do well in what will be his fifth appearance at the world meet.
”I have won medals in two editions and I hope to be lucky again.
”Besides the gold in 2009, I also took home two bronze medals in Vietnam in 2005.
”Vietnam was my first world championships and it will be a good achievement if I win again eight years later.
”My friends are watching me and maybe my family members from Perak will too, so I have every reason to make them proud,” he added.
