Having taken up karate at the age of four, Shakila Sani Jefry Krisnan is determined to win gold at the Myanmar SEA Games in December.
KUALA LUMPUR: Shakila Sani Jefry Krisnan is ready to chop her way to her first karate gold medal in the 27th SEA Games in Myanmar.
Shakila only managed a bronze and silver in the women’s under-61kg and team kumite respectively at the 2011 SEA Games in Palembang, Indonesia.
The 21-year-old, who broke into the national team in 2008, looks destined for a bright future in karate.
“My inspiration has always been my late grandfather ... he was really interested in karate when I was younger. His interest rubbed off on me and I would fight with my older brother at home.
I won my first medal at the age of five in an interclub competition,” said the exponent, who hails from Kapar, Selangor.
Shakila joined the Suba Karate Academy in Kapar at the tender age of four and has grown into a talented exponent.
“I have great memories there (Suba Karate Academy) as I enjoyed training there ... and it was where I grew up as a fighter. I will certainly not forget where I came from,” she said.
But her hopes of returning from Myanmar in December with a gold medal will depend on whether she can get over the psychological fear of injury.
She was out for three months with a back injury and only returned to training recently.
She had to skip the Third Islamic Solidarity Games in South Sumatra, Indonesia, and the pre-SEA Games in Myanmar – both in September.
“I underwent a smooth rehabilitation and am ready for the Games in Myanmar. I’ll give it my all and go for gold,” promised Shakila, who added that she would not pull her punches although she has just returned from an injury.
“I believe that Myanmar, Indonesia and Vietnam will be a threat but I will give it my best.”
