PETALING JAYA: Coming away with a medal will be tough, but Nur Jannah Batrisyah Abdullah is going to try anyway at the IWF World Championships in Wroclaw, Poland, from Oct 20-27.
The weightlifter who will be making her debut at the championships is looking to improve her national record in both the snatch, and clean and jerk events in the women’s 75kg and above category.
Nur Jannah currently holds the snatch (101kg) as well as the clean and jerk (125kg) records. She set the latter at last month’s Islamic Solidarity Games in Palembang, Indonesia, en route to winning the bronze in the women’s 75kg and above category.
“I’ve had the snatch record for over a year now. The clean and jerk is just a month old, but still I’m really hoping to set a new mark,” said the 23-year-old.
“It’s a highly-competitive field out there and I think it’ll present the best chance for me to push myself.”
What’s more, as she is set to miss out on the SEA Games after her category was left out of the competition, the Segamant-born weightlifter sees this as the perfect opportunity to end her year on a high note.
SEA Games aside, Nur Jannah is desperate to compete in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year and is targeting a podium finish.
“I won’t get to compete in the SEA Games because they’ve left out all the heavyweight categories. It’s disappointing as I was really looking forward to it. But, I’ve got the World Championships and I definitely have to make my debut there count,” she said.
“I take it all as part of my preparations for the Commonwealth Games. That’s what I am aming for now and will work towards that target. I’m not particular about the colour, but one thing’s for sure, I want to bring home a medal.”
Besides Nur Jannah, Malaysia’s only other representative at the Championships will be Sharifah Inani Najwa Syed Anuar in the 53kg.
