Myanmar SEA Games mascots ready to welcome participants and fans this December.
NAYPYITAW (Myanmar): Hosts Myanmar are on course to stage the biggest ever Games in their sports history after 44 years.
A total of 33 sports will be hosted by Myanmar in the 27th SEA Games which will be held mainly in Yangon and Naypyitaw from Dec 11-22.
Deputy Minister of Sports H. E. U Zaw Winn, who is also the vice-president of the Myanmar Olympic Committee said more than 90% of the work has been completed on all the infrastructure.
“We are optimistic to get everything in place a month before the start of the Games. We have done all the arrangements to welcome our guests,” said Zaw Winn after receiving the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM) delegation at the Main Sports Complex in Wunna Theikdi on Thursday.
He said that the Local Organising Committee (Locog) had taken great pains in getting ready for the Games since 2010.
“We have two main committees – one is the working committee for the organisational aspect and the other for the preparation of athletes,” said Zaw Winn.
He said that they would play hosts to some 5,976 participants and would offer 460-460-637 gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
“To ensure the smooth operations of the Games we have already tested out some of the venues. So far we have conducted events in 15 sports and would be hosting another pre-SEA Games event by next month,” said Zaw Winn.
The 33-member SAM delegation led by president Ahmad Khawari Mohd Isa were briefed on the Locog preparations and were later taken to visit the Main Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremony will be held and also to the aquatic centre and the indoor stadiums.
Also present were Dr Myat Thu Ya Soe, secretary of Myanmar National Olympic Committee, Naw Tawng, deputy director general of Ministry of Sports and Khin Maung Lwin, the joint secretary general of Myanmar Olympic Committee.
