Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has promised swimmer Chui Lai Kwan that he will look into the issue of athlete selection.
KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin may be a busy man but his quick response to the plight of former international Chui Lai Kwan has won the heart of the Sabahan swimmer.
Lai Kwan, who had been disappointed with the selection issue, was happy that Khairy has assured there would be greater clarity and transparency in future with regards to issues concerning athlete selection and qualification for major tournaments.
Lai Kwan had sought the help of Khairy after she did not make the selection for the World Championships in Barcelona, which ended on Aug 4, although she had qualified on merit at the Singapore Open in June.
The 23-year-old swimmer who quit the national team in 2003 had paid for the trip from her own pocket.
Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) decided against sending her because the national body had set the Malaysia Open from May 16-20 as the last qualifying tournament for the world meet.
“I sent an email to our Sports Minister and I am happy that he replied and gave me the assurance that the matter would be looked into. None of my mail to Asum seeking clarification has been answered so far,” said Lai Kwan.
“Our Sports Minister has asked relevant officials to investigate. In fact, in his email he shared with me the feedback he received from the National Sports Council (NSC) regarding the selection matter. He ensured that there would be greater clarity and transparency in the future,” she said.
Lai Kwan hopes that Khairy would continue to keep an eye on the matter so that no other swimmers would be “victimised”.
She pointed out that last year Foo Jian Beng had also left the national team but he could not sustain himself as an independent athlete because of a lack of support.
Give us a fair chance: Lai Kwan
