KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian National Basketball League (MNBL) is back! The tournament will be held from Sept 6-29 at four different venues – Miri Indoor Stadium in Sarawak (Sept 6-9), Bintulu Indoor Basketball Court (Sept 12-14), Chung Hwa Indoor Stadium in Kota Baru, Kelantan (Sept 21-23) and the finals at the Maba Stadium in Kuala Lumpur (Sept 27-29).
MNBL organising committee chairman Ranndy Yap believes that this year’s edition will be more action-packed than before.
“It’s going to be exciting ... the MNBL provides another platform for our local players to compete at a higher level,” he said at a press conference to announce the tournament schedule and participating teams.
Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary general Datuk Sieh Kok Chi, who was also present, hoped that “this year’s MNBL will be a competitive one and benefits the fans”.
Each team are allowed to have a maximum of three import players on their roster but only two are allowed to play at any one time during a game.
This year’s tournament will feature defending champions Farmcochem, Westports Malaysia Dragons, Sarawak Fire Horse and two newcomers – Bintulu Eagle and Kelantan Warriors.
In an attempt to get teams to be more offensive and make the games more entertaining, there will be a slight tweak to the format where teams who win the first leg of the semi-finals by a 30-point margin or more will not have to play the second leg. They will, instead advance straight to the final.
