PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian men’s sepaktakraw team are expected to advance to the semi-finals of the ISTAF SuperSeries INDIA, which begins in New Delhi Thursday.
In the opening match in Group B, the Malaysians should get past United States Thursday before wrapping up their group fixture against Iran on Friday. Barring any upsets, they are expected to meet either India or Singapore in the semi-finals.
Defending champions and top seeds Thailand, are in Group A with Japan and Myanmar while third seeds South Korea have Brunei and Indonesia for company in Group C. India, seeded fourth as hosts, are in Group D alongside Singapore and are thus assured of a quarter-final berth.
The Malaysian women’s team face a much tougher test. They take on top seeds and reigning champions Thailand Thursday and Japan on Friday in their Group B fixtures. The Thai women are expected to reign supreme again, just like their male counterparts last year, who won all their ISTAF SuperSeries 2011-12 matches. However, Malaysia can earn a ticket to the second round with a win over Japan.
Group A of the women’s competition comprises second seeds Vietnam, fourth seeds India, Indonesia and South Korea.
In both the men’s and women’s competition of ISTAF SuperSeries INDIA 2013-14, only the top two teams from each group advance to the play-off stage based on points accumulated. The second round in the men’s competition is a single elimination, eight-team play-off stage while for the women it’s a four-team play-off stage.
The second leg will be held in Bangkok (Sept 26-29) and third leg in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, from Oct 31-Nov 3.
