PETALING JAYA: Point guards Ooi Ban Sin and Tong Wen Keong saved Police the blushes by helping them claw back from a seven-point deficit with two minutes left on the clock to beat Sarawak 90-89 in overtime in the semi-finals of the Agong Cup National Basketball Championship in Tawau Friday.
Defending champions Police were on the backfoot for most of the match against an energetic Sarawak side.
The East Malaysians, who earned promotion from Division Two last year, looked set to be coasting to a famous win when they led 74-67 – and with less than two minutes left – in the final quarter.
Police skipper Ban Sin, however, made it 72-74 after Soo Eng Heng had crucially sunk a three-pointer before forward Ivan Yeo made it 74-74 with an easy jumper.
Sarawak, however, regained the upperhand when Tsok Kian Hong converted a free-throw, but impressive Police guard Wen Keong sent the match into overtime by scoring another basket from the line with seconds left on the clock.
In the five minutes added time, Ban Sin, who had a poor overall match, finally stepped up to the plate by sinking two three-pointers before further baskets by Wen Keong, Ivan Yeo and the impressive Gan Hong Hoong gave Police a 90-85 lead.
Sarawak, ever the fighter, slashed the deficit to 90-89 with a basket each from centre Yek Chai Teck and Voon Yiew Ting but it was simply too little too late.
Hong Hoong topscored for Police with 21 points while Ivan and Ban Sin chipped in with 16 points and 15 points respectively. Match-hero Wen Keong finished with 10 points.
Sarawak’s topscorers were Ma Vhee Kheun (24pts) and Chai Teck (21pts).
Police will face Malacca in a re-match of last year’s final, which the men in blue won 70-69.
Earlier, Malacca cruised into the final after thrashing Penang 81-45, with captain Chee Li Wei leading the way with 14 points.
The women’s final will be between two giants – Johor and Federal Territories.
In the semi-finals, Johor crushed Pahang 75-55 while FT edged Malacca 48-45.
