Danes are back to share passion for gymnastics with Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Danish Gymnastics and Sports Association (DGI) Holstebro-Lemvig team are back in town as they embark on a tour around Malaysia from July 10-24.

The 45-strong Holstebro team of 39 gymnasts, four instructors and two team managers are on a two-week tour. And they kick off their visit with a performance at the Takashima Resort Centre in Bukit Minyak, Penang today.

The troupe will then move on to United Plantation Bhd in Teluk Intan, Perak (July 16), Sekinchan (July 17), Kuala Lumpur (July 18 and 19) and Johor Baru (July 21).

“The DGI and MGF (Malaysian Gymnastics Federation) have a long-standing partnership. So, it’s an honour to be invited again and share our passion for gymnastics with Malaysia,” said team manager Minna Kirstensen.

In fact, this will be second visit for the Danes who also embarked on a similar tour here in 2009. They have also toured countries like Brazil, Fiji and Ghana.

And this time around the troupe promises a whole lot more as there will be gymnastics shows, exhibitions and coaching clinics. Performances will include tumbling, trampoline, modern dance, street dance choreography incorporating hoops, balls, clubs.

Interestingly, all the gymnasts (aged between 18-26) go through a yearly selection process held every August to try and make the team. Besides that, they also partially sponsored their own flight tickets and accommodations.

“It’s great to see so many young Danes being involved in gymnastics even whilst having careers. They have a true passion for the sport. It’s a great foundation project for MGF and hopefully their passion and love for the sport will rub off on our youngsters to be inspired to take up gymnastics,” said MGF secretary N. Shanmugarajah.

“Besides the show and coaching clinics, our main aim is to reach out and raise the profile of the sport and on top of that give them high entertainment value gymnastics,” he added.
