Danny races to four-stroke lead at Glenmarie Masters

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Danny Chia carded a solid four under-68 in the second round of the PGM Northport Glenmarie Masters to enjoy a four-stroke lead at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in Shah Alam yesterday.

Danny’s two-day total of 135 puts him ahead of American James Bowen (139), who carded a 71 yesterday. Malaysia’s Mohd Azman Basharudin, Grant Jackson (England), Chang Tse-peng (Taiwan) and Thailand’s Jakraphan Premsirigorn are joint third – six shots behind on 141.

Despite struggling with a stiff neck, Danny overcame the odds to put himself in the driver’s seat to become the first Malaysian to win an Asian Development Tour (ADT) title this season.

Danny was hot off the blocks with two opening birdies before making the turn in 35. He holed a massive 20-foot birdie putt on one and added two more birdies on two and four to stay in the lead.

“My short game was really good. You are bound to miss the greens here because it’s very undulating ... so you really need a good short game to save you,” he said.

The in-form Bowen, meanwhile, maintained his bid for a unique Malaysian double after winning the PGM Sime Darby Harvard Masters in Kedah two weeks ago.

“I had two slip-ups but came back strongly with a couple of birdies. It was good to finish my round with that birdie on eight. That was really good for confidence and a great way to finish,” said Bowen, the current ADT Order of Merit leader.

The halfway cut was set at five-over 149, with 66 players qualifying for the last two days.
