Banting boy Zulfahmi bags SAM award for 2012 exploits

PETALING JAYA: Banting’s Mohd Zulfahmi Khairuddin has been named the Sportwriters Association of Malaysia (SAM) -100 PLUS “Out-Do Yourself” award for his exploits in the Moto3 Motorcycle World Championships last year.

The 21-year-old Zulfahmi will receive the award – which honours an individual or a team who have achieved success against the odds – at the SAM-100PLUS-KBS Award Ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, Petaling Jaya today.

Last year, Zulfahmi grabbed his first ever Moto3 podium finish (second) – at the Malaysian Grand Prix. He also created history by securing the first pole position ever by a Malaysian rider in the same race. He claimed another podium finish (third) in the final leg at Valencia.

The highlight of the awards ceremony will be the recipient for the SAM-100PLUS-KBS “Athlete of the Year (2012)”.

Six nominees were shortlisted and voting was done by SAM members to decide who they feel is the best athlete of the year. The nominees will each receive RM1,000 while the winner takes home RM10,000 and a Crystal Trophy.

Datuk Lee Chong Wei (badminton) and Pandelela Rinong (diving), who won a silver and bronze medal respectively at the 2012 London Olympics are the frontrunners for the top prize.

The other nominees include world No. 1 and seven-time world champion Datuk Nicol David (squash), Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek, Malaysia’s first ever AMF World Cup champion (bowling) and medal winners at the Paralympics – Hasihin Sanawi (silver - archery) and Mohd Ziyad Zolkefli (bronze - shot putt).

Meanwhile, Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia (SRAM), have been named as the Most Dynamic Association.

SRAM have been a role model with a brilliant set-up that has strong grassroots and development programmes. They have also produced several top class players, including Nicol.

The award is recognition for the tireless efforts put in by the people behind SRAM in achieving success for the nation.
