PETALING JAYA: Going through two thirds of the season without any World Championship points is hard to stomach for Malaysian Moto3 rider Amirul Hafiq Azmi.
There are six more races left in the 18-leg championship and Amirul now hopes to put some points on the board in the next race at the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy on Sept 14.
“The motivation is still there for me. In some of the races, I managed to be in the group that was fighting for points. Unfortunately, the lack of experience let me down,” lamented debutant Hafiq.
The SIC Ajo rider came close twice. He finished 16th – just one position shy of a championship point – at the Grand Prix of Argentina in April and French GP in May.
“Sometimes I felt good on the bike during practice or qualifying. But on race day, everybody went full throttle and it was very competitive.
“I want to improve and get some points before the season ends. But I will take it race by race. I also hope the Malaysian GP this year will be a special one for me,” he said.
Hafiq will be one of the three Malaysians on the Moto3 grid for the Malaysian GP at the Sepang International Circuit from Oct 24-26.
Besides Hafiq, the others are Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Mohd Hafiza Rofa.
Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah of Petronas Raceline Malaysia and Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman of Idemitsu Honda Team Asia will fly the Malaysian flag in the Moto2 category.
